The Society came into being on the 13th Jan 1923 when 40 farmers and breeders met in Newport Pagnell to "place the breed into pedigree status, to stimulate home demand and to explore export trade".
The breed prospered until the early 60's when trade declined due to the soaring value of pelts of the other main breeds. During the last twenty years the breed has progressively moved forward as sheep quality has improved and flock masters have appreciated the self shedding benefits which are increasingly important to those wishing to develop low maintenance, and low input sheep systems. Stock have been exported to Australia, New Zealand, South America, West Indies, and there is a growing flock throughout Europe.
Demand for the breed today is at an all time high. The Society intends to build on recent successes and will continue to move the breed forward via breed improvement and stock selection programmes, thereby ensuring the Breeds future prosperity.
